Fewer bicycle thefts – losses remain at record levels
The number of insured bicycle thefts has continued to decline. According to the latest figures from the German Insurance Association (GDV), around 115,000 insured bicycles were stolen in 2025 (2024: 135,000). Household contents insurers paid out a total of approximately €150 million, the same amount as in the previous year.
“The average loss from a bicycle theft has now reached €1,270, higher than ever before. High-value bicycles and e-bikes in particular are driving costs upward,” says GDV CEO Jörg Asmussen.
High-value bicycles particularly affected
Bicycles in many households are now worth significantly more than they were just a few years ago. Premium e-bikes often cost several thousand euros, making them not only attractive means of transportation but also lucrative targets for theft. At the same time, the higher purchase prices increase the financial risk for consumers.
“Many bicycles today are far more expensive than they were only a few years ago. That is why policyholders should regularly check whether their insurance coverage still matches the current value of the bicycle,” says Asmussen.
Additional protection often makes sense
Bicycles are generally covered against burglary theft under household contents insurance, for example, if they are stolen from a home, basement, or locked garage. However, simple theft while out and about, such as on the street or outside shops, often requires additional bicycle coverage.
Around 27 million households in Germany have household contents insurance. About half of these policies include a bicycle clause. Insurers recommend keeping purchase receipts, the frame number, and up-to-date photos of the bicycle in order to simplify claims handling in the event of theft. High-quality U-locks or chain locks, as well as parking bicycles in clearly visible locations, can also help reduce the risk of theft.
In addition, bicycles and e-bikes have increased significantly in value in recent years. Bicycle owners should therefore review their insurance coverage regularly. Increasingly, the decisive factor is the value of the stolen bicycle.
